Giving Today's Street Children a Better Tomorrow

October 2010                          e-news  issue 5

Dear Supporter

We are very proud of the success so many of our youngsters have made of their lives.  Jeeban, together with his wife Rehana, is the first to buy his own home.  He is an example and inspiration to the others.

However we continue to depend on your ongoing support so that we can provide these opportunities for more of our children.

with heartfelt thanks from all of us at Future Hope

Tim

“THIS IS NOT MY STORY, IT IS OUR STORY”

This is what Jeeban wanted to stress when he invited Tim and Erica Grandage to his new home. Together Jeeban (which means “life” in Bengali) and his wife Rehana have saved enough to apply for a mortgage and have bought their own flat.

They have a son, Rehan, aged 2 whose life chances couldn’t be more different from those of Jeeban before he arrived at Future Hope some 20 years ago.

Jeeban aged about 8 was found abandoned and wandering through the streets of Kolkata. It was the time of the pujas when the streets were full of people celebrating and setting off fireworks. He was covered in cuts and splinters of glass from the explosions.

At Future Hope, like all the youngsters there, he found a loving home, the medical care, the food and the education that we all take for granted. He discovered a talent for sport and represented Future Hope in Rugby both at home and on tours overseas to Sri Lanka and the UK. In his gap year he worked as an assistant sports teacher at the Dragon School in Oxford and he is now a senior sports teacher at a reputable school in Kolkata. His wife Rehana is a primary class teacher at an English medium school also in Kolkata. Jeeban is the first Future Hope graduate to buy his own home.

This is his story and Rehana’s story. But it is also Future Hope’s story and your story...

Please keep on supporting us.  We need you more than ever...

The opportunity that Future Hope provides for the lost and abandoned children of Kolkata is only possible because supporters like you have stuck with us over the years. We know that sometimes we don't look after you as well as we should, but that is because we want to keep our administration costs to the absolute minimum.  Everyone who works for Future Hope in the UK is a volunteer fitting in the work around busy schedules.  Our fundraising and supporter care team is growing and we truly are working on getting better at keeping you informed

Keeping Future Hope running...
From the beginning the day to day running costs of Future Hope have been covered by fundraising in the UK.   But the these costs are rising
  • food prices in India have rocketed in the last 2 years
  • the exchange rate has been less favourable this year
  • we are actively upgrading at Future Hope, providing better facilities and more qualified staff

All this means that UK fundraising has fallen short this year.  For any charity, the holy grail for fundraisers is regular giving, however small.  If you would like to start making a regular donation to Future Hope or if you would like to review your giving please either go to our donor page on the website or standing order form here.  And don't forget that if you are a UK tax payer, we can claim GiftAid on your donation, which is another 28%.  So please fill out the GiftAid form

What your donation means to us...

£6.50 feeds a child for a week (that is under £1.00 a day)

£80.00 provides everything for a child for a whole month

If you would like more details of costs please contact us by email

Get involved...
Please get in touch if you or your organisation would like to get more involved with fundraising.  We are always looking for new ideas and new talent...

About Future Hope
Future Hope was founded in 1988 to provide a home, an education, medical aid and opportunity to some of the children of Kolkata who found themselves living on the streets.

We started with just a handful of boys but there are now 8 homes (3 girls' homes and 5 for boys) accommodating over 160 children. Our older children are now in full time employment or in further education.

In addition is our own Future Hope School where most of our children plus around 120 day scholars (children from the local slums) enjoy the benefits of a good all round education.

Sport remains an important part of life at Future Hope, which is perhaps best known for its rugby, but also offers a range of other sports both both girls and boys.

Future Hope
and Just Giving
We understand that JustGiving does take a small fee for handling our donations.  However, because we have no paid administration in the UK, we consider JustGiving to be a real cost saving for us.  It also provides invaluable training (for free) for our volunteers as well as other considerable added value that other similar providers
do not offer.
