Blast from the Past...

Phil Rider, Chairman of OneStream takes a trip down memory lane in sharing with you his first Mobile Phone experience.
Back in 1987 I found myself in a job interview with a company with a very strage sounding name; Nokia Mobira. At that time mobile phones had only been available for 18 months and hardly anyone had one, other than successful businessmen. I found myself with a mixture of bewilderment and excitement when talking with a burly Finn - the MD of Nokia (as it was to become) about the phenomenon that was about to be unleashed on the World. In his hands he gripped the Nokia Mobira Cityman 1320 ETACS (pretty name eh?), and told me this was the future.
When he handed it to me, it nearly fell through my palms, such was the weight of the thing, with a six inch Rubber antennae I came to know as a half wave, and rigid, clear plastic keys that were not easy to press. The battery life was well under a day and the recharge time was 8-10 hours. However, unusually at the time it was grey when everything else on the market was black.
The Cityman (as we affectionately called it) was also a thing of beauty compared to the big rival Motorola 8000s which, was the market leader.
When I was then offered the job as Major Accounts Manager for Nokia the thing that excited me most was not the Cityman, but the company car - a Volvo - which was much better than the car I had previously (how times change!). The Cityman came with a car kit that the phone slotted into, and was yours for the small sum of £3000 with a contract! In those days you had to pay big for your phone. This was classed as a Hand Portable despite its weight. I also had a fixed carphone fitted - the Autoline, meaning I had two handsets on the dashboard and was the envy of everyone I knew. We literally used to get potential customers to sit in the car and make a call as a means of seeing how mobile phones worked. The Cityman was an iconic product in that it was the first phone that captured the imagination with its design and set Nokia on its way to being the company it is today.
It is interesting to see that they still fetch £100 or so as design icons.
We've got Christmas wrapped up...
